Forget everything you know about Blood Rayne, though, most likely, if you have less than twenty years is the first time I hear about it. All you need to know is this: Rayne is a damper, a cocktail of equal parts man and vampire, hired by a group to hunt down paramilitary and other bloodsucking creatures of darkness. Since the hybrid nature of the guarantees superhuman strength, the exterminator is sent as a scout busty exploring a haunted castle. In addition to vampire bohemian, electric frogs, mantises and other creatures that looks like tasty aberrations, Rayne must pay attention to luminous flashes (it is still half-vampire), and the endless traps scattered along the way - missiles, guns, rotary blades, drill bits sharp, and so on. The game looks like a side-scrolling platform game, a scenario reminiscent of the long (the limit of plagiarism) Castellanies the old way, divided into fifteen levels. At the end of each stage Rayne comes in a coffin that teleports to the next. In the middle there are checkpoints in the form of fountains from which flows blood, some distributed 'at random, often the most challenging sections of the first (hopefully). The core game play comes from the management control system, which allows the execution of moves of a certain complexity: for example, lift the enemy off the ground and then hurl it to the side to destroy the various mechanisms, or infect them to make them explode, or even , use them as a springboard to ascend to the fixtures. Especially during the most hectic phases of combat, the rhythmic pressure of buttons allows you to put together combos very rewarding, decimating the unlucky with a fury brutal if you wish, you can pierce all in a row with a much more perfunctory shot (bullets, however, are scarce), although, clearly, there is more pleasure in torment them with the blades and then end up crushing their limbs crawling with the heel.

As you may have guessed, sadism is the key to the interpretation of the whole experience: not only because it is dressed in latex Rayne as a mistress or because you throw on his enemies like a beast ... oh no! The "real" Sadism is all in the game structure, which is revealed immediately terribly frustrating, not only for the level of difficulty that goes along a curve so much per pound balanced (which brings in some places to put together a geometric progression of desperate dead, which can seriously lead to the launch of the controller) but, rather, due to a control interface at times counter-intuitive and does not accept margins of error. For example, to perform a somersault, which allows to overcome certain heights, you must press the button to shoot forward and then, in quick succession, the opposite direction to the direction and the button for jumping (it was planned "canonical" double jump; everything would have been more immediate). In situations later in the game it may happen that this maneuver is accompanied by the need to land on an enemy's head and to continue the climb down more pressing the attack button, using the victim as a springboard for another leap. Just stray an inch and start all over again. And not to mention the sections in which Rayne takes control of a white crow ... do not do not to spoil the "torture" of discovery.
